The Taboo 'F' Word – Greatway Financial
Finance is usually a sensitive topic for most people. In fact, it's, more often than not, a despised “F” word. For whatever reason, it seems that the status quo has been to accept the “taboo” that is finance, and never discuss it amongst family and close friends. Though talking money is personal, it shouldn’t be a taboo. We need to learn from one another and share our stories with those that we trust in order to gain insight into what works, and what doesn’t. Furthermore, talking to a professional allows us to be in an environment that is conducive to growth. One which helps us learn better money habits, how to spend wisely, invest wisely, and take total control over our finances and life. (Related: What is Wealth?)
When we delve into the fascinating world of personal finance, we learn that building wealth is not about collecting information, but rather implementing proven strategies. In other words, we must not, and need not to, reinvent the wheel. There are people who are specialized in providing financial advice, life security expert knowledge, and financial planning, as well as budget consultation. Those that take advantage of this expertise, and shed antiquated beliefs regarding the perception of money, learn to invest and protect their most important assets; their lives and loved ones.
Financial literacy is just as important as literacy, because, without both, we fail to connect.
Understandably, talking about money can bring out feelings of guilt, shame, and anger for some – especially when dealing with financial difficulties. That being said, this should be another reason why we need to talk to each other so that we can eradicate the fear of talking about finances, and more importantly, get rid of poverty and financial illiteracy. Often, it seems like our whole lives are centered around money. Whether it is paying taxes, university fees, bills, going out, or experiencing life in any capacity, money always comes in play. Evidently, money isn’t everything, but it is an important thing. Together, we can figure out the intricacies of personal finances and work together to practice good financial behaviour.
Money can either be just a "thing" or a tool that can be used for our benefit. To some, it is a manufactured construct created simply to help us trade goods and services, while to others it is the essential power of life. To us, finances are as essential as learning to read and write. Financial literacy is just as important as literacy, because, without both, we fail to connect. Finances have nothing to do with financial status, judgment, intelligence, or any such quality. But rather, the care that we have for ourselves and our family. It is a foundational principle that must be talked about in order for us to thrive personally and as a community. In conclusion, the next time you hear the “f” word, don’t make it a taboo; instead, find the opportunity to discuss a point of life that impacts us all equally. (Related: Can Money Buy Happiness)
